Persepolis build around 650 B.C. by Xerxes and Darius to celebrate Noruz the Persian new year (and to collect tributes from the subject nations) and to receive foreign dignitaries is Shiraz’ biggest attraction.
Alexander the great burnt it down in 330 BC after conquering it as retaliation for Darius having burnt down the acropolis in Athens earlier.
Persepolis was rediscovered in the 1930s and is still an impressive sight.
