Diwali in Kolkata

Es ist Diwali, das hinduistische Fest des Lichts, von der Bedeutung her etwa so wie das christliche Weihnachten. In Kolkata, wo Kali herrscht, wird ihr gehuldigt und seit Tagen werden in der Stadt Altäre mit Figuren von ihr in ihren verschiedenen Inkarnationen aufgebaut.

Kali ist die blutrünstigste und brutalste der Hindu-Götter. Sie ist gefürchtet und ihr werden Opfer gebracht um sie fern zu halten. Auch kann man keine Statuen von ihr kaufen, weil niemand sie im Haus haben will, denn das bedeutet Ärger.

Warum sie auf Shiva steht habe ich noch nicht herausgefunden.

Abends gab es dann auch noch Feuerwerk. Eine seltsame Mischung aus Halloween, Weihnachten und Silvester.

Vorher waren wir natürlich auf der Straße unterwegs.

It’s Diwali, the hindu festival of lights. In Kolkata it’s all about Kali and in the whole city they have been building effigies of her and her multiple incarnations.

Kali is the most bloodthirsty and brutal of all the Hindu gods. She is feared and all the offerings she is given (including goats at the main Kali Temple) to keep her appeased and away. You can’t even buy statues of her because nobody wants to invite that kind of trouble into their homes.

I haven’t figured out yet why she’s standing on Shiva

In the evening they fired some fireworks. A strange mix of Halloween, Christmas, and New Years Eve.
